In a 2011 style handgun, the slide is the reciprocating mass of the gun, meaning it is the major component of the handgun that is moving back and forth each time the gun is fired. By tri-topping the slide and adding the additional lightening cuts, we are able to reduce the mass that is slamming back and forth on the frame which in turn lessens the perceived recoil and front sight lift. A good analogy would be the comparison of me rolling a bowling ball at you and then a tennis ball... if you were to stop both under your foot, which is going to move you more? By reducing the weight of the slide we minimize the inertia so when the slide bottoms out on the recoil system, it's more of a kiss instead of a hammer. With a lighter slide, we can also utilize a lighter recoil spring. The purpose of the recoil spring is to retard the rearward motion of the slide and to send it back forward which chambers another round if there is one present in the magazine. The contact of the slide stopping at the rear most position is the cause for most of the front sight lift. By making that contact softer, we minimize the impact which causes the gun to shoot flatter.
Additionally, we offer 6" guns that have an extra inch of sight radius over a 5" gun but weigh exactly the same as a traditional 5" gun. Because this weight is more economically proportioned, it too adds to a flatter shooting gun. In our 6" guns, there's more weight out in front of the pivot point of the gun, which in a 2011 is the top grip screw. With the leverage provided by the extra mass way out front, again, less front sight lift. As a custom offering exclusive to Freedom Gunworks and Cheely Custom, we also have spiral fluted bull barrels. The spiral fluting offers a certain "chicks dig it factor" but it serves an even better purpose in allowing us to bring the weight of a bull bbl down to what a bushing bbl and bushing weighs. Now, a guy can get a 6" bull barrel iron sighted gun that weighs what a traditional 5" bushing barrel weighs. In fact, our 6" bull bbl Limited gun (34 ounces) weighs LESS than a traditional 1911 and other factory built 2011 pistols. We only use high quality components in our builds and most are listed as options on the "build sheet" that you can download from the link on this page. The build sheet will give you a price quote and other options and components are available upon request. Any gun we build comes with a limited lifetime warranty. It doesn't matter how many times the gun changes hands, you do not have to be the original owner, we stand behind our products. If something breaks, we will repair or replace it at our cost. This does not cover normal wear and tear items like springs and barrel life, and any machining or work done outside of our shop voids the warranty. If any additional machining operations are performed on a gun we built, the warranty is null and void.
At Freedom Gunworks, we strive to provide our customers with cutting edge technology in all of our gun builds. Our Open guns are no exception. As in our custom Limited builds, we utilize lightened slides to reduce the reciprocating mass, high quality fire control components, hand lapped frame to slide fit, precise bbl fits for the utmost in accuracy, and custom finish options. We've composed a build list with quality components for you to choose from and can walk you through the steps in selecting those components to get the custom you gun you want just the way you want it. If there are components you'd like to use that aren't featured on the list, let us know and we'll do what we can to accommodate you.
